The Sporting Hip: A Primary Care Survival Guide from Diagnosis to Treatment

Most sports, even those involving hitting a ball with racquets or bats, require the lower limbs to move the body into position and it is not surprising, therefore, that 75% of all sports injuries take place “Below the Belt”. This talk will therefore provide a tour around the sporting hip, including: common acute and chronic conditions in the hip; how they can be treated; and expected outcomes.

Mr Gorav Datta, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, will discuss the causes of hip pain that can be seen in the sporting population; from elite athletes to “Weekend Warriors”. We will cover such hot topics as:

  • when is a groin strain more than just a groin strain?
  • do ‘occult hernias’ really exist?
  • what hip symptoms are ‘serious’?
  • when does a hip/groin injury merit further investigation?
This talk will cover the various injuries that can occur within and around the hip joint, emphasizing the problems caused by hip impingement and labral tears. Surgical management plans and new techniques will be discussed, especially focusing on the new possibilities that hip arthroscopy brings.

Mr Datta will offer his advice on sensible precautions for prevention of injury, and will also cover the expected outcomes of each procedure, including how to manage patient expectations.
