We are pleased to announce our return to the North West for another day course: The North West's 2nd Orthopaedic Masterclass will be held at the Best Western Plus Pinewood Hotel on Saturday 12th October 2019 from 9.30am – 4.30pm.  The event will be delivered by 5 leading local consultants from the BMI Alexandra Hospital. This interesting and exciting programme offers 7 hours CPD for only £119 + VAT - this includes refreshments, 2 course buffet lunch and speakers' slides.


Less is More - What Can a Neurosurgeon Offer in the Spine by Mr Kanna Gnanalingham, Consultant Neurosurgeon 
In this talk, Mr Gnanalingham will cover the main degenerative spinal conditions both successfully and unsuccessfully treated by spinal neurosurgeons. Mr Gnanalingham will also discuss the latest in treatment pathways, including minimally invasive surgical options available to patients.

This CPD session will be designed to engage all participants in open dialogue and help break down anxiety and referral for assessment by a spinal neurosurgeon, hopefully providing greater confidence to therapists to discuss any worrying and challenging issues with their patients.
Sarcoma: A Guide for Allied Health Professionals by Mr Amit Kumar, Consultant Orthopaedic and Sarcoma Surgeon
We are pleased to welcome Mr Amit Kumar, Consultant Orthopaedic and Sarcoma Surgeon, for this talk aimed at helping clinicians to recognise this potentially harmful condition.

Sarcomas are uncommon cancers that can affect any part of the body, on the inside or outside, including the muscle, bone, tendons, blood vessels and fatty tissues. The earlier it is detected the better the chances of successful treatment; therefore Mr Kumar has designed this talk to enable the allied health professional to spot the red flags and warning signs both for soft tissue sarcoma and bone tumours.

Mr Kumar will include the following:

  • History taking and diagnosis
  • Onward referral and what to do if you are concerned
Upper Limb Problems and Litigation: A Clinician’s Guide to the Commonly Missed Pathologies of the Shoulder and Elbow by Mr Martin Holt, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon
Mr Martin Holt, Chairman of the British Elbow and Shoulder Society (BESS) Education committee, will discuss pathologies of the shoulder and elbow; focusing on those conditions which are easy to overlook or misdiagnose.
The shoulder and elbow are complex joints with many pathologies presenting as pain and stiffness. It is important to be able to establish the correct diagnosis in order to initiate treatment. Mr Holt will therefore share his more than 20 years’ experience in the clinical assessment and treatment of a number of conditions that he sees regularly in his practice – and shares advice on what to do when you see them in yours. 

The Top 10 Hand and Wrist Conditions in the UK by Mr Zaf Naqui, Consultant Hand and Wrist Surgeon
Hand and wrist problems are all too common, experienced by people from all backgrounds; from office workers to professional athletes and can point to a wide variety of aetiologies. In this interactive session Mr Zaf Naqui, Consultant Hand and Wrist Surgeon, will discuss the most common hand and wrist conditions you are likely to come across in clinic.
In this session we will cover:
  • Presentation of common conditions
  • History, examination and diagnostic pearls
  • Treatment options - conservative and surgical
Attendees will leave this talk with a better understanding of the most common hand and wrist conditions, learn how to spot them quickly and know how to manage them in a primary care setting.

Save the Knee! The Latest Approach to Knee Joint Preservation and Regeneration by Mr Bilal Barkatali, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon 
Having himself had an ACL reconstruction to get back to sport, Mr Bilal Barkatali understands the importance of getting people back to full activity; whether as a high-level athlete or just to keep fit. In this talk, he will therefore cover a range of knee preservation options, including conservative measures such as pre-habilitation and injectable pain control.

He will go over the latest cartilage repair techniques, including stem cell utilisation, platelet rich plasma as well as the latest ideas on ACL reconstruction and its importance.
