FAQs about whole body MRI scans

What is a Whole Body MRI scan?

A Whole Body MRI scan is a comprehensive health screening examination that creates detailed images of multiple areas of the body during a single appointment. It can provide an overview of your internal health and may identify findings that require further investigation or monitoring.

Unlike CT scans or X-rays, MRI does not use ionising radiation.

A Whole Body MRI provides detailed images of many of your body’s major organs and structures, including the:

Brain
Liver
Kidneys
Spleen
Abdomen
Pelvis
Bones and joints
Muscles and soft tissues
A Whole Body MRI with Spine also includes dedicated spinal imaging.

A Whole Body MRI may identify a range of findings including:

Certain solid tumours (typically larger than 1 cm)
Fatty liver disease
Non-cancerous cysts
Musculoskeletal abnormalities
Degenerative spinal changes (Plus option)
No screening test can detect every condition, and further investigations may sometimes be recommended.

AMany people choose a Whole Body MRI for reassurance, to establish a health baseline or to take a proactive approach to their wellbeing.

The scan provides detailed imaging that may identify significant findings before symptoms develop, while also offering reassurance when no important abnormalities are present.

A Whole Body MRI may be suitable for adults aged 40 years and over who are generally well but want a clearer understanding of their health.

It may also be appropriate for people with:

A family history of certain conditions
Ongoing health concerns
A desire for preventative health screening
An interest in establishing a baseline for future comparison
A referral is required to ensure the scan is appropriate.

Your Whole Body MRI appointment usually takes around 80–100 minutes, depending on whether additional spine imaging is included.

Our experienced radiographers will guide you throughout the examination and make sure you’re as comfortable as possible.
