What is an MRI scan?
MRI stands for Magnetic Resonance Imaging. MRIs are safe and completely painless; they use a magnetic field and radio waves to help your doctor make a diagnosis by building up a detailed picture of the inside of your body.
Many clinicians prefer MRI scans to other scan types because they provide a wealth of information without the involvement of radiation and can be used to investigate almost any part of the body.

What to expect at your MRI scan
Before your scan
Our team will explain what to expect and complete the necessary MRI safety checks, including asking about your medical history and any implants or medical devices. We’ll also let you know if your scan requires any special preparation.

During your scan
You’ll lie on a table that moves into the MRI scanner. The scanner makes loud noises, and you’ll need to remain still while the images are taken.
Your radiographer can see and speak to you throughout the scan. You’ll also have a call bell you can press if you need their attention.
Your MRI images and results
Your MRI images are available to view and download through our secure online portal, Connect, immediately after your scan.
One of our Consultant Radiologists will review your images, and we aim to send their report to your referring clinician through Connect within one working day.
Your referring clinician will explain the findings and discuss any next steps with you.

Can I get an MRI scan today?
We offer same-day MRI appointments, subject to availability, with further appointments over the next few days so you can choose a time and price to suit you. Our clinics are typically open from 7am to 11pm, seven days a week.
Already have a referral? Upload it, choose an available appointment and pay for your MRI scan online.
For brain MRI scans, please upload your referral for our clinical team to review. Our team will then help arrange your appointment, as brain MRI appointments cannot currently be selected online.

Do I need a referral for an MRI scan?
You will need a referral from a qualified healthcare professional to have an MRI scan. We can arrange this for you via our Fast-track referral service if you don’t already have one.

How long does an MRI appointment take?
The scan itself is only part of your appointment. You’ll also need time to check in, complete safety checks and change if needed.
The total time depends on the type of MRI and the number of areas being scanned. We’ll confirm how long to allow and any preparation needed before your appointment.
