Osteoporosis screening assesses bone strength and fracture risk using a DEXA bone density scan. It helps identify osteoporosis and osteopenia before fractures occur, allowing treatment and lifestyle changes to begin earlier where appropriate.
Who should have osteoporosis screening?
Osteoporosis screening may be appropriate for women after menopause, adults over 50, people with previous low-impact fractures, long-term steroid users, those with a family history of osteoporosis and others with recognised risk factors.
What does a bone density scan assess?
During a DEXA scan, we typically assess:
The hips
The lower spine
These areas are most commonly affected by bone density changes and provide a reliable indication of overall bone health.
Results are compared against established reference values and reviewed by experienced clinicians, helping guide next steps where needed.
What to expect at your DEXA scan
Wear comfortable clothing without metal fastenings, such as zips, buttons or underwiring, as these can affect the images. You may be asked to change into a gown if needed.
Our team will welcome you, complete the necessary checks and explain the scan. Your height and weight will also be measured.
You’ll lie on the scanner table while a scanning arm passes over you. The scan is painless and usually takes 10–15 minutes. Your total appointment will take longer to allow for checking in and preparation; our team will confirm how much time to allow when you book.
After your scan, you can usually leave straight away and continue your normal daily activities.
Can I self-refer?
Yes, you can apply for a DEXA bone density scan without a referral from a healthcare professional, provided you meet our self-referral criteria and are registered with a UK GP or healthcare practitioner.
Click “Book a DEXA scan” and complete the form. Our clinical team will review your information to confirm whether the scan is appropriate. Once approved, our team will contact you to arrange your appointment.
If a referral is required, our Fast-Track Referral Service can arrange a consultation with an appropriate clinician.
How will I receive my results?
Your scan images and analysis will be available through our secure online patient portal, immediately after your scan.
A consultant specialist will prepare your report, which we aim to send to your referring clinician within one working day. If you have self-referred, your report will be sent to you and your registered GP.
Please arrange an appointment with your referring clinician or GP to discuss your results and any next steps.
Where can I have a DEXA scan?
Our DEXA scans are available at our Wimpole Street clinic in central London’s Harley Street medical district, a short walk from Oxford Circus and Bond Street stations.
