Dr Vasilis Kouranos is a Consultant Respiratory Physician of the Interstitial Lung disease/Sarcoidosis unit at Royal Brompton hospital for the last few years. He completed his training in respiratory medicine at the General Hospital of Thoracic Diseases, the largest university hospital in Athens, Greece.
He holds a Masters degree in Thoracic Oncology when he focused on antibiotic prophylaxis of chemotherapy-induced neutropenic lung cancer patients. After the completion of his MSc, interstitial lung disease and sarcoidosis became his main clinical and research focus. He was awarded a research scholarship grant for his PhD on screening patients with biopsy-proven sarcoidosis with cardiac MRI to detect cardiac involvement. This study was published in a high-impact journal which influences current practice in the field and was the beginning for the development of a large cardiac sarcoidosis service at the Royal Brompton Hospital.
Clinical expertise:
Dr Vasilis Kouranos completed a 3-year fellowship in interstitial lung disease and sarcoidosis at the Royal Brompton Hospital before starting to work as consultant in the ILD/sarcoidosis unit. He has a sub-specialist expertise in sarcoidosis and particularly cardiac sarcoidosis, which was the subject of his PhD thesis.
He has great experience in management of patients with sarcoidosis, interstitial lung disease and pulmonary fibrosis. As a member of the consultant team at Royal Brompton Hospital he has developed clinical skills in management of patients with post COVID-19 infection. He also manages patients with general respiratory problems such as:
• an unexplained cough
• asthma
• bronchitis
• chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
• respiratory infections
• bronchiectasis
