Over a year has passed since Covid-19 was designated a pandemic. During this time there have been considerable advances in our knowledge of treating acute Covid, and vaccine therapy has been a huge success. However, many patients who contract Covid-19 have persistent symptoms which can last for several weeks or months. This multi-system condition has been termed Post Covid Syndrome (also known as Long Covid Syndrome) and the management is proving to be highly challenging.

Bringing together cardiology and respiratory issues, our 3 speakers who run Long Covid clinics will be exploring the latest guidance on the diagnosis and management of Long Covid Syndrome. This is a rapidly evolving area and it is important that healthcare professionals are up-to-date with the current knowledge we have about the condition.

Consultant Respiratory Physician, Dr Vasilis Kouranos, and Consultant Physician in Respiratory and General Medicine, Dr Himender Makker, will be tackling the respiratory problems which Long Covid can induce. They will be examining the definition of Long Covid and its signs and symptoms, including persistent breathlessness, chest pain and sleep disturbance, as well as diagnostic approaches. Following that, we will be discussing best management strategies for long- and short-term patients.

Dr Rakesh Sharma is a highly experienced Consultant Cardiologist at the Royal Brompton Hospital, a tertiary cardiac centre and teaching hospital in London. His expertise includes the management of heart failure, arrhythmias and hypertension which are skills that are particularly relevant for treating patients with Long Covid Syndrome. He will be using this to inform his talk and teach us how the cardiac system is affected and how his Long Covid clinic can help.

With symptoms that many patients are still struggling with over a year into the pandemic, this is not one to be missed!
