Dr Spencer Ellis has been a Consultant Rheumatologist and General Physician at the Lister Hospital, Stevenage since in July 2001 and at Pinehill Hospital, Hitchin since 2002.
His current practice includes General Rheumatology Clinics in addition to an Early Arthritis clinic and a specialist Multisystem Autoimmune Rheumatic Disease Clinic.
Dr Ellis manages his inflammatory arthritis patients according to NICE recommendations and all relevant patients have disease activity scores monitored to guide treatment escalation.
Dr Ellis trained at St. Georges Hospital, Tooting and qualified in 1991. His specialty training took place in the North East Thames area between 1996 and 2001. During that time he developed a particular interest in multi system rheumatic disorders, such as systemic lupus erythematosus and vasculitis.
He has experience in a wide range of rheumatic disease and general medical problems and remains involved in General Medicine on calls within the NHS.
Dr Ellis is involved closely in medical education at all levels and holds the position of Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer in affiliation with the Royal Free/UCL Medical School and Senior Clinical Tutor for Cambridge University Medical School. He is the Chair of the Training Programme Rheumatology in the East of England and an examiner for the Royal College of Physicians.
He has been Clinical Director for Rheumatology, Dermatology and Neurology at East & North Herts NHS Trust for the past 10 years, as well as an examiner and host for the Royal College of Physicians’ PACES exam.
Dr Ellis is married with 2 busy teenage children. He has an avid interest in contemporary and urban/street art. He is a regular theatre goer and likes to attend gigs in his spare time.
