Kanna Gnanalingham

Consultant | Manchester

A consultant in Neurosurgery in Greater Manchester, with a specialist interest in Brain tumours (especially pituitary) and complex spine surgery. Mr Gnanalingham believes in a multi-disciplinary approach to the management of brain and spinal disorders. Surgery is usually considered when other medical and non-operative treatments have not been successful. Surgery is frequently undertaken using minimally invasive (ie ‘key hole’) techniques. This allows for reduced blood loss, tissue damage, less post-operative pain and faster recovery.

Mr Gnanalingham undertook Neurosurgical training in London, including fellowships in pituitary, and spinal surgery at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery. He learned minimally invasive techniques at several centres in the UK and US and was appointed as a Consultant at the Greater Manchester Neuroscience Centre at Salford Royal Foundation Trust (SRFT) in 2005. He is also an honorary senior lecturer at the University of Manchester.

In recognition of his expertise, Mr Gnanalingham is frequently invited to speak at national and international meetings and conduct workshops for spinal and pituitary disorders.

Recognised for good operative and patient management skills, strong background in research, qualified to doctorate level and with numerous publications and presentations.

Zaf Naqui

Consultant Hand And Wrist Surgeon | Manchester

Zaf Naqui has been a Consultant Hand, Wrist & Upper Limb Surgeon since 2008. He has a super-specialist interest in hand and wrist injuries, arthritis, wrist pain and wrist arthroscopy which he manages alongside all common hand conditions including emergencies. He treats elite professional athletes including cricketers, rugby league, cycling, motor cross, boxing, UFC, climbers, tennis players and footballers.

His NHS practice is at Salford Royal Foundation Trust (Hope Hospital), one of the leading teaching hospitals of the University of Manchester. His roles include Specialty Tutor and Lead for Clinical Governance & Patient Safety in Trauma & Orthopaedics.

He is a Council Member for both the British Society for Surgery of the Hand (BSSH) and the Federation of European Surgical Societies of the Hand (FESSH).

Amit Kumar

Consultant Orthopaedic And Sarcoma Surgeon | Manchester

Mr Kumar is a Consultant at Manchester University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and performs hip and knee surgery. His specialist interest is in musculoskeletal oncology in particular soft tissue sarcomas. He is also the Clinical Director of the Sarcoma Pathway Board for Greater Manchester Cancer.

Mr Kumar qualified at the Royal Free and University College London medical school in 2003 and undertook his early surgical training in the North West. His specialist post-graduate training in Trauma & Orthopaedics was in the East Midlands (South) T&O rotation.

Mr Kumar subsequently completed fellowships in lower limb arthroplasty and sarcoma in Leicester, Nottingham and Wrightington hospitals.

Other medical interests include teaching at the University of Manchester and training along with research in arthroplasty and sarcoma.

Martin Holt

Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon | Manchester

Mr Martin Holt is nationally and internationally recognised as an arthroscopic specialist in shoulder and elbow surgery and has been lecturing and demonstrating shoulder and elbow surgery since 1995. He is the course convenor and head of the teaching faculty of Master Techniques in Arthroscopic Shoulder Surgery course and is visited by Shoulder consultants, European and British Fellows for advanced arthroscopic surgery teaching. He is also head of the teaching faculty for the Sheffield Shoulder arthroplasty course.

Martin Holt specialises in keyhole (arthroscopic) surgery of the shoulder including rotator cuff repair, shoulder stabilisation and the management of stiff and painful shoulders. Rugby, football, golf, cricket, skiing, and tennis are just some of the sports associated with shoulder and elbow injuries regularly treated by Mr Holt who also manages complex fractures of the upper limb in his private as well as his NHS practice at the University Hospital of South Manchester major trauma centre.

He was elected to the council of the British Elbow and Shoulder Society (BESS) in 2010 and is a founding member of the BESS education committee a reviewer of research papers for the Journal Shoulder elbow and is author and series editor of the G.O.S.T. a Guide for Orthopaedic Surgeons and Therapists.

Bilal Barkatali

Consultant Orthopaedic Knee Surgeon | Manchester

Bilal is an NHS consultant at Salford Royal University Teaching NHS Trust, which is one of the leading hospital trusts in the UK. It serves as the MTC (Major Trauma Centre) for the Northwest of England, treating severe and complex cases of trauma surgery. He is the clinical lead responsible for elective surgery, national joint registry and enhanced recovery. He is also actively involved in teaching and training young doctors and surgeons of the future.

Bilal has a passion for research and has published numerous peer-reviewed publications, and presented at international, national and regional academic meetings, winning a number of awards.

He is currently involved in a number of multi-centre national trials, as well as collaborations with the universities of Manchester and Salford. His current work is looking into stem cell research and biomaterials. He has recently been appointed Honorary Senior Lecturer at the University of Manchester.

Bilal ensures that his surgical practice is delivered to an exceptionally high standard, and prides himself on making the correct decisions for and with his patients, ensuring excellent clinical results and happy patients.
