Mr Mazin Ibrahim, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, will cover the latest updates in the diagnosis and management of hip pain. The goal of the event is to provide attendees with a thorough understanding of the various conditions that can cause hip pain and the latest treatment options available. The focus will be on evidence-based practices and the use of imaging and other diagnostic tools to accurately diagnose and treat hip pain in patients. 


Some specific points covered in the talk would be the causes and symptoms of osteoarthritis in the hip, the difference between hip impingement and hip osteoarthritis, the use of imaging studies to diagnose and monitor labral tears, and the use of non-surgical and surgical treatment options for avascular necrosis. The talk will also cover the role of physical therapy in the management of hip pain, including exercises and other modalities that can be used to alleviate pain and improve function. 


Overall, the talk will provide attendees with a comprehensive overview of the current state of the art in hip pain management and will help you to stay up-to-date with the latest advances in the field. 

The talk will cover various prominent topics with regards to hip pain, in particular it will cover: the diagnosis and treatment of osteoarthritis in the hip; hip impingement; greater trochanter bursitis; gluteal tendinopathy; labral tears; avascular necrosis; and other extraarticular causes of hip pain.  


  • Osteoarthritis of the Hip: Osteoarthritis of the hip is a degenerative condition that affects the cartilage and bone of the hip joint. The talk will cover the causes and risk factors for osteoarthritis of the hip, as well as its symptoms and signs. It also covers the use of imaging studies, such as x-rays and MRI, to diagnose osteoarthritis of the hip, and the different treatment options available, including non-surgical options like physical therapy and medications, as well as surgical options like hip replacement. 
  • Hip Impingement: Hip impingement is a condition in which the bones of the hip joint do not move smoothly, causing pain and limited range of motion. Mr Ibrahim will explore the difference between hip impingement and hip osteoarthritis, and the use of imaging studies, such as x-rays and MRI, to diagnose hip impingement. Following this, Mr Ibrahim will discuss the use of of non-surgical and surgical treatment options for hip impingement, including physical therapy, arthroscopy, and open surgery. 
  • Greater Trochanteric Bursitis: Greater trochanteric bursitis is an inflammation of the bursa, a fluid-filled sac that acts as a cushion between the greater trochanter and the underlying muscles and tendons. We will cover the causes and symptoms of greater trochanteric bursitis, as well as its diagnosis and treatment. 
  • Gluteal Tendinopathy: Gluteal tendinopathy is an overuse injury of the tendons of the gluteal muscles, which can lead to pain and limited range of motion in the hip. The talk will cover the causes, symptoms, and treatment of gluteal tendinopathy, including physical therapy, exercises, and other modalities. 
  • Labral Tears: The labrum is a ring of cartilage that surrounds the hip joint socket, and a labral tear can occur due to injury or degeneration. The use of imaging studies, such as MRI, to diagnose labral tears, and the different treatment options available, including non-surgical options like physical therapy and medications, as well as surgical options like arthroscopy will be explored by Mr Ibrahim. 
  • Avascular Necrosis: Avascular necrosis is a condition in which the blood supply to the bone is interrupted, leading to the death of bone tissue. There will be a particular focus on the treatment of avascular necrosis, including non-surgical options like physical therapy and medications, as well as surgical options like joint replacement. 

All of these topics will be covered in the light of latest research, treatment guidelines, and practices, the attendees will be able to have a comprehensive understanding of the current state of the art in hip pain management.

Mr Mazin Ibrahim is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at The Princess Grace Hospital. He completed his higher surgical training at University College London. He trained at the University College London Hospitals, The Royal London Hospital, Chelsea and Westminster Hospital NHS Trust and Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children.


Mr Ibrahim is an advocate for day-case arthroplasty surgery, and is interested in enhancing patient recovery following joint arthroplasty surgery. He considers robotic surgery an integral part of enhanced patient recovery.
