Webinar: How to Diagnose and Deal with ACL Tears

This event is available to purchase on-demand and was first delivered on Wednesday 25th January 2023. Once you've purchased the course, you can watch it immediately from your Oryon Develop dashboard by logging into your account.

With an occurrence rate of 1 in 3000 people, an ACL injury is the most common knee-ligament injury. ACL tears are especially prolific this time of the year, especially with all the ski injuries that happen during the winter season. With such a high prevalence, it is essential to further your knowledge in procedures and the latest treatment options.

Mr Ian McDermott, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, offers a patient-centric viewpoint and will be giving us a refreshing insight into resolving ACL injuries. Join us to increase your diagnostic and decision-making potential!

Delving into the identification and diagnosis of ACL tears to begin, we will be evaluating the sensitivity and specificity of clinical examinations for assessing ACL ruptures. We will be highlighting the key points to look out for in history taking and clinical examination, as well as emphasising the importance and value of appropriate imaging.

Mr McDermott will be reviewing the ACL structure and discussing how it tears, including the issue of partial tears and whether there is such thing as an isolated ACL injury. We will present a clear and simple explanation of the anatomy and its relevance to injury. Why is the posterior horn of the medial meniscus so important? How influential is the anterolateral ligament?

Mr McDermott will be exploring the vast range of treatment options for ACL repairs, from the conservative to the operative. We will be examining biological repair, reconstruction, and the role of braces. There will be a particular emphasis on understanding what is the optimal route of rehabilitation and when reconstruction is appropriate.

Finally, we will identify the indicators for when it is safe to return to play.

Schedule:

• How reliable is clinical examination?

• The role of imaging in diagnosis

• The different types of ACL tears

• Understanding the posterior horn of the medial meniscus and the anterolateral ligament

• Biological repair & reconstruction

• Internal bracing

• Understand what the right rehabilitation is and when it is safe to return to play

Learning Outcomes:

• Develop a focussed approach to your history-taking and clinical examination skills, with a full understanding of the importance of imaging in making an accurate diagnosis

• Update your understanding of rehabilitation versus reconstruction and when each might be appropriate in different patients and different circumstances

• Improve your ability to gauge when the patient is ready to return to play
