Webinar: An Evidence-Based & Practical Approach to Pilates for AHPs

This event is available to purchase on-demand and was first delivered on 24th March 2022. Once you've purchased the course, you can watch it immediately from your Oryon Develop dashboard by logging into your account.

Did you know that Pilates was originally referred to as “Contrology”, as all the exercises focus on the dedicated control of specific muscle groups?

In this interactive course and workshop, Physiotherapist, Helen O’Leary from Complete Pilates, will be discussing the theory and demonstrating practical exercises for Pilates-based rehabilitation. We will be particularly focusing on rehab of low back pain and Pilates techniques en masse, for athletes and the amateur.

Helen is a Chartered Physiotherapist and Director of Complete Pilates, a physio led Pilates company based in London and online. She has worked in professional sport within London Wasps men’s rugby, where she worked within a world-class multidisciplinary team and will be using this experience to inform the talk invaluably.

Beginning with a recap of the anatomy of the lumbar spine and why this is the most common area for Pilates training, we will be delving into the clinical markers in athletes and the amateur.

Throughout, we will be examining evidence-based research and case studies to create informed conclusions for best-practice rehabilitation. Helen will also be talking about gym-based loading to complement strength training and advancements for the future for Pilates and patient recovery.

We’ve got your back! Roll out your mat and get involved in basic and complex exercises to teach your patients, and take away practicable, relevant knowledge on low back rehabilitation.

Helen is a Chartered Physiotherapist and Director of Complete Pilates – a physio led Pilates company based in London and online. Helen has worked in professional sport within London Wasps men’s rugby where she worked within a world class multidisciplinary team. This was where her love of Pilates was born and in 2010 completed her Polestar Pilates Comprehensive training. This is currently one of the only worldwide recognised qualification in Pilates and she used this as an adjunct to her treatment of acute injury and recovery.

After spending three years in elite rugby, Helen quite literally packed up her bags and ran away to join the circus, accepting a position with Cirque Du Soleil. As one of only two Physiotherapists on the show, she taught Pilates as part of performer’s ongoing maintenance treatment, to prevent injuries and as part of active rehabilitation. Pilates helped the performers, from tumblers to contortionists, remain strong and healthy throughout a gruelling schedule of up to ten shows a week.

After returning to London in 2015, Helen set up Complete Pilates as a way of helping people be active immediately after injury, surgery or pregnancy.
