Hybrid Event: 11th Annual Spinal Symposium

Oryon Develop is delighted to announce that this year, our flagship event, the 11th Annual Spinal Symposium, will be a hybrid event – both online and face-to-face at the world-renowned Royal College of Physicians. Giving you the opportunity to learn whichever way you prefer, we’ll be making sure you have an experience to remember!

This year’s line-up explores a range of conditions and aetiologies from spinal cord disease, to cervicalgia, to fasting for inflammatory conditions. Receive your 7.5 hours’ CPD and gain in-depth knowledge of the whole spine, from expert speakers in their fields.

Select whether you will be attending the face-to-face event (places are limited so secure yours now!), or simply watch the webinar online from wherever is convenient. You will get a full recording of the event either way and can catch up with the recording, if you are unable to attend either of them live!

You will receive an email with instructions on joining us in the days leading up to the course – please check your junk mail if you have not received this!

Rehabilitation of Lumbar Spine Soft Tissue Injuries to Return to Play – Dr Philip Batty, Consultant in Sports & Exercise Medicine

Why is it that returning to exercise has never been more important? Renowned speaker, Dr Philip Batty, joins us to discuss restoring confidence in the body for activities of daily living, along with more complex movements. We will be exploring how maintaining cardiorespiratory fitness is vital in returning to play and still possible through a range of exercises. It is also crucial to optimise strength to support the spine whilst respecting the lower back injury. You will leave this session with practical tips and techniques to bring back to your clinic, as well as knowledge on the latest conservative rehabilitation methods.

Fasting for Inflammatory Conditions – Dr Dermot O’Flynn, General Practitioner

Did you know that fasting can be extremely beneficial for inflammatory conditions in the spine, such as Ankylosing spondylitis (AS)? General Practitioner and lecturer, Dr Dermot O’Flynn, will join us to explore intermittent fasting, including the 7-day Low-Calorie Fast, and fasting culture in our modern world. We will be discussing the strategies your patients can use to fast, the efficacy and the restorative process within the body, such as deflammation, autophagy/mitophagy, stem cell activation and positive effects on the microbiome.

Cervicalgia: Diagnosis and Management – Mr Caspar Aylott, Consultant Spine Surgeon

The neck is tasked with both protecting the spinal cord and supporting the head while allowing for a good range of movement. Cervicalgia, or neck pain, results in symptoms such as headaches, neck and shoulder pain and upper back pain and can reduce a patient's quality of life by transforming into a debilitating and disabling condition. In this interactive talk, Consultant Spine Surgeon, Mr Caspar Aylott, will provide an objective understanding of the fundamentals of diagnosis and management of Cervicalgia.

Non-Surgical Causes of Spinal Cord Disease – Dr Tabish Saifee, Consultant Neurosurgeon

Diseases associated with the non-compressive spinal cord, such as multiple sclerosis (MS) and vitamin deficiency-caused syndromes, are extremely important to look out for and understand how to treat. Through a case-based and visual approach, learn from Dr Tabish Saifee what the pathophysiologies are and how you can spot the signs in your patients through examination and investigation. He will be delving into conservative, non-surgical interventions that you can implement in your own clinic.

The Degenerative Spine - Mr Syed Aftab, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon

Life Lessons in Spines - Mr Bob Chatterjee, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon

A grasp of spinal mentality and a multi-disciplinary approach is imperative for correct diagnosis and best-practice treatment. Diagnostic scans are more than just what is on them. We must take patient histories, understand past trauma or other factors, and look at the whole patient to get to the root cause of the problem, giving them the best possible results so that they can get their lives back. To do this, we will be examining failures in NHS and private spinal pathways through case studies, and the concept and context of evidence-based medicine.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Learn the reasons why returning to exercise after a soft tissue spinal injury is so important and practical techniques that you can use with your patients
  • Understand how fasting can be used as a vital way of preventing and reducing inflammation in the body, including spinal conditions
  • Enhance your knowledge on Cervicalgia symptoms and treatment methods from a pain consultant’s perspective
  • Expand your diagnostic potential and be able to advise your patients with spinal cord diseases on best-practice interventions
  • Be able to communicate to your elderly patients the best possible advice on degenerative spinal condition treatment and management methods
  • Understand the psychology behind spinal patients and form strategies to ensure they don’t get lost in an untailored spinal pathway
