It's normal for your memory to be affected by stress, tiredness, certain illnesses and medicines. But as you get older and more forgetful, these could be early signs of dementia.

Dementia is not only about memory loss; it can also affect the way you speak, think, feel and behave; so it is important to understand how to manage and treat this syndrome.

We are pleased to welcome back Dr Mashkur Khan, Consultant Physician, for this thought-provoking talk on dementia. He will be discussing the different types of dementia, and the genetics behind them, and will help you understand the condition and how to help your patients with the treatment options that are available today.

Join us to learn all about dementia with an expert speaker in this 2-hour CPD talk.

Dr Mashkur Khan will be starting off the talk by going over the basics of dementia. He will talk about the symptoms, diagnosis and how common the syndrome is.

There are many types of dementia, and the causes are different for each type. So Dr Khan will help you to understand each one. He will discuss Alzheimer's disease, vascular dementia, mixed dementia, frontotemporal dementia and more. Dr Khan will be looking into the genetics of the syndrome and what to do if you are predisposed to it.

There is currently no cure for dementia but there are medicines and treatments that can help with reducing the symptoms. Dr Khan will review modern treatment options for those with dementia. He will conclude with what he thinks the future of dementia will hold, and how society will manage and treat it. How can we help our patients and family members with dementia?

Mashkur Khan

Consultant Physician | London

I was appointed as a Consultant Physician & Honorary Senior Lecturer at Epsom General Hospital and St George's University of London in 2002. I have pursued an active interest in general medicine, including multi-system pathology and multi-system disorders. I have also developed expertise in diagnostic dilemmas and complex medical problems which are subtle and need careful interpretations. I also do dedicated sessions on the Acute Medical Unit and I am fully versed in acute care, as well as chronic care. I have both inpatient and outpatient commitments and run a busy medical practice. I have a particular interest in medical education and I am the Royal College of Physicians District Tutor, along with being the Programme Director for Core Medical Training on behalf of the London Deanery. As an Honorary Senior Lecturer I teach and examine for the Undergraduate Finals, I am also an Examiner for the membership of the Royal College of Physicians (MRCP UK) and I am the Host Examiner for Epsom General Hospital.

I am particularly interested in all aspects of General Medicine, including syncope and blackouts and I do a full work up for people who are dizzy or feel faint. I also have an interest in Parkinson's disease and its variants and I have chaired both national and international meetings and I have presented in these forums. I also chair the South West Thames Movement Disorder Group and I have been involved in getting specialists together in the South West Thames Region. I am also interested in cognitive problems and memory loss and I am currently the Trust Lead for dementia.

I currently provide both inpatient and outpatient services at Ashtead Hospital. I run two outpatient clinics per week and I am happy to see patients of all age groups. I am very keen to see patients who have undiagnosed medical conditions and have atypical presentations such as weight loss, tiredness and balance problems. I would be happy to see patients at very short notice should the requirement be so.

I am currently an investigator for the COVID-19 vaccine trial. We are currently recruiting for Novavax and we are hopeful that this will be the fourth vaccine out next summer. I am seeing new and follow-up patients in the trial and we are checking their response to the vaccine. We are doing a double blind study and the vaccine arm should prevent the development of COVID.

We are also checking the antibody response for over a year to determine how long the immunity lasts.
