Webinar: The Ageing Spine - From Cradle to Grave

This event is available to purchase on-demand and was first delivered on Monday the 3rd October. Once you've purchased the course, you can watch it immediately from your Oryon Develop dashboard by logging into your account.

An estimated 90% of the population will experience neck or back pain during their lifetime. However, for certain people, back pain can become chronic and disabling.

With the success of the face-to-face event in February 2022, we are pleased to be welcoming back Mr Caspar Aylott to deliver this talk as a webinar. For those who were unable to attend in person, here is your chance to learn about The Ageing Spine.

Consultant Spine Surgeon, Mr Caspar Aylott, will be discussing the engaging journey of the spine. Mr Aylott's stance on his patients is that surgery is the last resort and conservative treatments are effective in more than 90% of the patients he sees.

During the talk, we will be examining how spines change as we go through each phase of life. We will be considering evidence-based treatments for the conditions your patients may present with at different stages and weighing up what works best.

We will also be looking at normal spinal variation between individuals. Mr Aylott will simplify some practical biomechanics, a topic he has a doctorate in, with a particular interest in dynamic stabilisation.

Schedule:

  • How do our spines change throughout our life?
  • What are the normal variations between individuals?
  • Evidence-based treatments and what works best
  • Simplifying practical spinal biomechanics

Learning Outcomes:

  • Enhance your knowledge on the journey of the spine throughout the life cycle
  • Identify evidence-based spinal treatments and which work best
  • Understand practical spinal biomechanics.

Caspar Aylott

Consultant Spine Surgeon | London

Caspar is uniquely dual qualified in the UK both as a Consultant Spine Surgeon and a Mechanical and Materials Engineer. He completely Internationally recognised Spinal Fellowship training in New Zealand, Canada, Nottingham and Bristol. He also has a Doctorate in spinal biomechanics with a particular interest in dynamic stabilisation.

Caspar became an Orthopaedic Spinal Consultant in 2010 and has extensive experience in managing busy on call and all types of orthopaedic and spinal problems.

Caspar is now the lead surgeon at the UK Spine Centre in London, based at the Harley Street Hospital.

Caspar has developed an excellent reputation for looking after patients. This is based not just on his technical skills as a spine surgeon but equally importantly his ability to communicate clearly and sensitively helping patients to understand their backs properly.

Caspar strongly believes that empowering patients to do the right things to help themselves is crucially important in providing effective spinal care. He emphasises the importance of treating patients not just MRI scans. Caspar considers surgery, and especially spinal fusion, a last resort.

Caspar runs a very popular ‘One-Stop’ spine clinic where patients are assessed, imaged and diagnosed within two hours. This is really convenient for patients avoiding multiple visits. Caspar writes comprehensive clinic letters to everyone involved in a patients care providing clear direction. He provides many second opinions where patients have become frustrated and dissatisfied with an apparent lack of care and advice.

Caspar performs all spinal procedures from injections and denervation techniques through to complex surgeries from neck to coccyx. His expertise includes MIS, micro-discectomy and laser discectomy, Balloon Kyphoplasty, dynamic stabilisation including disc replacement, and fusion. He specialises in day case spinal surgery which is unique in London. More than 95% of his patients go home on the same day after surgery, even fusion cases.

Caspar loves teaching, from prospective sixth form medical students in schools to International Spine conferences abroad. He is a Faculty Trainer for several spine techniques including Balloon Kyphoplasty and dynamic stabilisation and is regularly invited to talk Internationally on spinal biomechanics.

Caspar has more than 50 publications and presentations and is continually involved in research. He co-authored one of the largest studies on Cauda Equina Syndrome. Caspar is a reviewer for The Bone and Joint Journal. He is also a medico-legal Expert in spine and provides regular complex opinion.

Caspar is a member of the European Spine Community and British Association of Spine Surgeons (BASS).
