Webinar: Sports Nutrition – Fuelling the Amateur & the Elite

Join us and feed your brain some nutritious knowledge on how to fuel amateur and elite sportspeople based on their requirements. Sports Nutritionist and Specialist ED Dietitian, Maja Berry, will be looking at diet, both as an individual and based on the sport, rather than following media advice. We will be discussing specific micro and macronutrients, energy levels, hormones, and Relative Energy Deficit in sports (RED-S). Read more by clicking ‘Agenda’ below.

This event is available to purchase on-demand and was first delivered on Thursday 30th September 2021. Once you've purchased the course, you can watch it immediately from your Oryon Develop dashboard by logging into your account.

Nutrition is a key component of sport to prevent injury, disease and ensure energy levels are sufficiently replenished. Make sure your patients, whether elite or amateur sportspeople, are fuelling their bodies correctly.

Maja Berry will first be exploring energy requirements and helping us to understand intake versus energy expenditure. Macronutrients such as carbohydrates and protein are particularly important for understanding the fuelling process within the body. We will be debating whether training fasted is good or bad for you, or if carbohydrates are needed beforehand, and how much protein is enough.

Vitamins and minerals are also necessary for energy production, immune function and other purposes. Maja will be examining which specific micronutrients sportspeople should be focusing on, as well as fluid requirements to maintain hydration.

In the second half of the evening, we will be analysing the key considerations for adolescent athletes in terms of nutrition, growth and hormones. Finally, we will be taking a deep-dive into the symptoms, diagnosis and treatment of Relative Energy Deficit in sports (RED-S).

Schedule:

Part 1:

  • Energy – requirements, energy intake vs expenditure
  • Carbohydrate – requirements, training fasted
  • Protein – requirements, how much is enough?
  • Micronutrients to focus on
  • What are the fluid requirements?

Part 2:

  • Key considerations for adolescent athletes
  • Relative Energy Deficit in sports (RED-S)

Learning Outcomes:

  • Expand your knowledge on energy requirements and the micro and macronutrients which fuel the body correctly for elite and amateur level sport
  • Learn how adolescent athletes may have different nutritional requirements based on growth, hormones and other factors
  • Be able to identify the signs of conditions such as Relative Energy Deficit in sports (RED-S) in your patients

Maja Berry

Specialist ED Dietitian & Sports Nutritionist | London

Maja Berry is originally from South Africa, but qualified as a dietitian in the UK in 2011. She has specialised in eating disorders since 2015, when she started working at the Priory Roehampton, covering the adult and adolescent inpatient wards. Her time on the adolescent ward increased her interest in the link between osteopenia, amenorrhea and anorexia, which led to a sports nutrition masters in 2019.

Maja began her private practice in 2020 and was able to provide outpatient nutritional support to adults and adolescents struggling with an eating disorder. She has subsequently grown her practice to include people struggling with REDs and continues to be interested in this area of nutrition. Many elite sports people believe it is natural in adolescence to have primary amenorrhea, which is often only investigated at the point of repeated injury. They do not have an eating disorder, but as a result of insufficient energy intake compared to energy expenditure, they can potentially develop osteopenia. This is very easily remedied with optimum nutritional balance.
