Osteoporosis and vertebral fractures are extremely common, particularly in postmenopausal patients. According to NHS RightCare and the National Osteoporosis Society, ‘one in five women who have broken a bone break three or more before being diagnosed’, suggesting there is a lack of early diagnosis in the UK.

Be the first to spot the signs in your patients and become familiar with the range of management options available by joining us and Dr Rizwan Rajak, Consultant Rheumatologist, for this webinar.

Osteoporosis and vertebral fractures require a high index of suspicion in postmenopausal patients. Dr Rajak will be giving us a breakdown of the common risk factors associated with the conditions and steps to take in patients, such as these, who are higher risk.

Learn about the range of assessment options and diagnostics available, such as what a DEXA scan involves and understanding the patient’s report. We will also be looking at assessing the patient for vitamin D and K deficiency and inadequate calcium intake. Optimal bone supplementation could be a necessary treatment route, and we will be understanding what this entails.

Reducing the risk of further broken or fractured bones is vital for osteoporotic patients, therefore they may be prescribed medicines such as bisphosphonates, hormone injections such as teriparatide or Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT), or supplementation. Dr Rajak will be exploring when each treatment is necessary and when to refer to a specialist.

Schedule:

  • Risk factors for osteoporosis and vertebral fractures
  • Postmenopausal patients
  • Assessment & diagnosis
  • Optimal bone supplementation and treatment options
  • When to refer

Learning Outcomes:

  • Become familiar with common risk factors for osteoporosis and vertebral fractures
  • Understand the range of assessments and diagnostics available, including DEXA
  • Learn about optimal bone supplementation and know when to refer patients onto a specialist
