Webinar: Current Concepts in Scoliosis - Bespoke Treatment for the Patient

Did you know in the UK around 3-4 in every 1000 children are diagnosed with scoliosis in need of treatment? Such a commonly presented condition can often be overlooked. This webinar will be the learning curve you need to enhance your knowledge and skills on best-practice management of scoliosis.

Mr Darren Lui, Consultant Complex Spinal Surgeon, joins us for his second spinal webinar in this series to talk to us about bespoke treatment for the scoliotic patient and their curve pattern.

This event is available to purchase on-demand and was first delivered on Thursday 24th June 2021. Once you've purchased the course, you can watch it immediately from your Oryon Develop dashboard by logging into your account.

To start, we will be understanding when patients need bracing and when should they be weaned off it. We all know the basic anatomy of scoliosis, but how do we analyse X-rays to identify skeletal maturity and growth velocity? Mr Lui will be looking at the Risser pelvis, left hand and olecranon to assess potential scoliotic patients. We will also be examining how you can objectively measure Cobb Angles and the reviewing efficacy of EOS dual planar imaging for scoliosis.

Minimising fusion levels is important to avoid long constructs, therefore selective spinal fusions can be chosen, such as Selective Anterior Thoracic Fusion and Anterior Thoracolumbar Fusion. We will be finding out what these involve. Mr Lui will also be exploring Vertebral Body Tethering (VBT) modalities, delving into growth modulation and anterior scoliosis correction. We will also be asking are there alternatives to VBT?

Early onset scoliosis can be a particularly problematic for young patients. We will be learning about treatment methods including growing rod technology, Magnetically Controlled Growing Rods (MAGEC) and Traditional Growing Rods (TGR).

Lastly, Mr Lui will be giving us his insight into conservative management of scoliosis, such as Scoliosis Specific Physiotherapy Exercises (SSPE), Schroth method scoliosis care, and bracing.

Schedule:

  • When should I brace and when should I wean bracing?
  • Understanding imaging to identify skeletal maturity and growth velocity
  • How can I minimize fusion levels?
  • What is Vertebral Body Tethering and its alternatives?
  • How can we treat Early Onset Scoliosis?
  • Conservative Management - A surgeons perspective

Learning Outcomes:

  • Be able to recognise skeletal maturity and growth velocity through methods of identification and imaging
  • Know how to diagnose the severity of scoliosis in your patients
  • Understand what each management method involves and when your patients require conservative or surgical treatments

Darren Lui

Consultant Complex Spinal Surgeon | London

Mr Darren F. Lui is fellowship trained in complex spinal surgery and works in London, UK. He deals with simple spinal problems such as back and leg pain (sciatica) as well as neck and arm pain (brachalgia/radiculopathy). He also deals with the entire breadth of complex spinal problems including deformity, trauma and cancer.

He trained on 3 International Spinal Fellowships: Adelaide and Meath Hospital, Dublin Ireland; Duchess of Kent Children’s Hospital and Queen Mary Hospital, Hong Kong; Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, Stanmore, London.

He has expertise to approach the spine in 360 degrees from anterior, lateral, oblique and posteriorly. This allows MIS techniques (Navigation and Robotics) to be optimally used to plan bespoke surgery to the patient’s sagittal & coronal parameters.

He specializes in adolescent & paediatric deformity surgery such as scoliosis and kyphosis/Scheuremann’s Disease.

He is an expert in surgical and non-surgical management. He works closely with specialist dealing with conservative management such as Schroth, SEAS and SSPE techniques. He also utilizes bracing where possible in the growing child.

He has a special interest in adult scoliosis, failed back syndrome and revision spinal surgery. One of his sub speciality interests are patients who have had previous surgery who may require very complex revisions. These are the most challenging cases, requiring extensive diagnostic testing, and often multiple revision surgeries but more importantly understanding when nothing further should be done. He works closely with his allied healthcare team to provide the correct rehabilitation.

He has a keen interest in spinal oncology and offers the very most up to date techniques in spinal cancer oligometastatic surgery.

As a surgeon at a Level 1 Trauma Centre he has expertise in severe polytrauma, including spinal fractures, as well as spinal cord injury. He uses the latest technology including spinal navigation for MIS percutaneous surgery as well as Mechanical Kyphoplasty.

His adult practice also incorporates those with back pain or neck pain which can be associated with radicular arm or leg pain. Many of these cases are amenable to minimally invasive or microscopic spinal surgery.

He is very interested in Medical Research and Teaching. He has a large research team at St. George’s Hospital and is an Honorary Senior Lecturer. He has a Masters Degree in Surgery and supervised 4 other Masters Degrees in Science and Surgery. He has 40 Peer Reviewed Publications, authored 167 podium publications and authored 46 posters. Teaching and research allow constant learning.
