Webinar: Pain & The Brain – An Exploration of the Connections

The question of whether there is a connection between physiological pain and the brain is a complex one, and there is still lots to be explored!

We have invited Consultant in Anaesthesia and Pain Medicine, Dr Deepak Ravindran, to examine the topic in anticipation of his upcoming book, The Pain-Free Mindset: 7 Steps to Taking Control and Overcoming Chronic Pain, which covers the matter in depth. This aims to be an interactive educational webinar on understanding the link between pain mechanisms and the role of the brain in processing and modulating the pain.

This event is available to purchase on-demand and was first delivered on Thursday 29th April 2021. Once you've purchased the course, you can watch it immediately from your Oryon Develop dashboard by logging into your account.

In the last 20 years, developments in neuroscience and functional imaging have helped us understand what happens when painful signals are perceived and processed differently. They have helped us understand how emotions can affect pain and as such we can even question whether pain is a sensation or an emotion! All in all, there is enough evidence to explain why the 400 year old cartesian model has gone past its sell-by date. During this webinar you will learn how and why this evidence has a new role to play in clinical settings to help your patients.

The second session will focus on the common pain conditions, such as low back pain, fibromyalgia and multiple sclerosis, and the latest International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP) diagnosis for chronic primary pain and nociplastic pain. We will also be covering how to view this diagnosis in terms of the latest understanding of the brain and its role.

The evening will provide the attendees with time to discuss and clarify any other issues around this fascinating intersection of mind and body.

Schedule:

  • What is pain and how is it processed?
  • Developments in neuroscience & functional imaging
  • Common pain conditions and diagnoses in chronic primary pain and nociplastic pain
  • How can this new understanding of the connection be used in clinical settings?

Learning Outcomes:

  • Learn about the evidence-base for connections between pain and the brain
  • Understand the definition of pain, whether it is a sensation or an emotion
  • Enhance your own practice by learning how this new understanding can be used in clinical settings
  • Recognise and differentially diagnose chronic primary pain and nociplastic pain
