‘Approximately 1 in 5 adults (18.2%) over 45 years of age in England has osteoarthritis of the knee’ (Arthritis Research UK, PHE). With such a high prevalence, it is essential to know the signs and best latest treatment options. Mr Ian McDermott, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, offers a patient-centric viewpoint and will be giving us a refreshing insight into resolving the osteoarthritic knee.
Delving into the definition and characteristics of knee arthritis to begin, we will be outlining the pathophysiology of the disease and how it presents in clinic. We will be identifying the importance of imaging in spotting the early- and late-stage signs, using case studies to demonstrate this point, and make an accurate diagnosis.
Mr McDermott will be exploring the vast range of treatment options from the conservative to the operative. We will be examining biological repair and reconstruction, the role of braces and of realignment osteotomy, focal resurfacing implants and partial replacements, and total knee replacement surgery.
Physical therapy and the correct forms of exercise also have important and very relevant roles to play. We will be delving into this, as well as intra-articular injections and use of stem cells. Analysing their pros and cons, we will be deciding which therapy (or a combination) works best for each patient. Lastly, discussing custom-made knees, we will understand why they are considered to be the new gold standard.
