Webinar: Marathon Overuse Injuries of the Lower Limb - Diagnosis to Recovery

Due to the demanding and repetitive nature of training for the Marathon – and the event itself – bone stress injuries (BSI), tendinitis and exercise associated leg pain (ERLP) are just some of the injuries that runners may find themselves debilitated by. One study found that ‘recreational and competitive runners reveal an incidence of injury during or after a marathon ranging between 16 and 92.4%’. (The International Journal of Sports Physical Therapy, 2013)

Dr Anthony Waring, Consultant in Sport, Exercise and Musculoskeletal Medicine, will join us in this interactive webinar to give us the step by step guide on common running-related injuries, their diagnosis and management strategies.

This event is available to purchase on-demand and was first delivered on Wednesday 26 August 2020. Once you've purchased the course, you can watch it immediately from your Oryon Develop dashboard by logging into your account.

In the first half of the webinar, we delve into the most common running-related injuries, such as “runners’ knee”, plantar fasciitis, meniscal injuries, patellar tendinitis and Achilles tendinitis. We examine their epidemiology and aetiologies, to understand the signs and symptoms to look out for and understand the specialist to refer onto if necessary. We discuss the various conservative and nonconservative rehabilitation methods and treatments available.

Exercise associated or related leg pain (ERLP), often referred to as the generic term “shin splints”, is another hot-topic in running injuries which we focus on in the second half. Medial tibial stress syndrome, chronic exertional compartment syndrome, tibial and fibular stress fractures, tendinopathy, nerve entrapment, and vascular pathology can all manifest as ERLP. We will be examining the necessary investigations and modalities to refer for to understand differential diagnosis of these conditions. Finally, we will look at management, including a running programme to rebuild strength and ease back in.

So get a head start on your CPD and book on today!
