Webinar: Spinal Oncology – When Back Pain Could be Spine Cancer

The spine is the most common site of secondary metastatic spine tumours (where cancer spreads from one part of the body to another) with two-thirds of patients with cancer developing bone metastasis. This may cause pain, instability, and neurological damage, rendering back pain one of the most common symptoms of cancer, although not all metastatic spinal tumours are symptomatic. Moreover, according to Cancer Research UK, ‘between 2 and 4 in every 100 brain tumours […] start in the spinal cord’. With primary cases being so rare, and secondary tumours being so prevalent, it is crucial to ensure the signs are not missed in either case and understand the best treatment options for your patients.

We study the pathophysiology of such conditions with the help of Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, Mr Hanny Anwar, whose research interests lie in primary spinal tumours, minimally invasive spinal metastasis treatment and safety in spinal surgery.

This event is available to purchase on-demand and was first delivered on Wednesday 22 July 2020. Once you've purchased the course, you can watch it immediately from your Oryon Develop dashboard by logging into your account.

Mr Anwar will discuss the types of metastatic spine conditions which can develop in patients. They could spread from the kidneys, lungs, and bones most commonly, but could also be haematological, lymphomatous, breast or prostate cancer. How the cancer cells metastasize and what it means for the spine once it reaches this area is vital for accurate diagnosis. Mr Anwar uses his wealth of knowledge and experience to explain how to assess your patient safely and how to spot the signs and symptoms.

We also examine diagnosis of primary spine tumours and the red flags to look out for whether they are benign or malignant. Mr Anwar will utilise case studies and an evidenced-based approach with MRI, CT and X-Ray scans to demonstrate his points and explain how to identify the cancers.

Lastly, we delve into the treatment options available, including surgery, radiotherapy and getting the most efficient result from minimally invasive therapies.

Schedule:

  • Metastatic spine cancers – spot the signs & symptoms
  • Primary spinal tumours – Benign & Malignant – spot the signs & symptoms
  • Assessment & diagnosis - MRI, CT & X-ray scans
  • Treatment options – surgery, radiotherapy & minimally invasive treatments

Learning Outcomes:

  • Recap the pathophysiology of spinal oncology
  • Learn how you can spot the signs and symptoms of both malignant and benign spinal tumours
  • Understand the latest treatment options and therapies available
