Webinar: Paediatric ENT Conditions - OSA and Allergic Rhinitis

With breathing problems being of paramount concern during the Covid-19 pandemic, Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA) in children may be particularly worrying for parents as it causes a total blockage of the airway. It is also important to identify the widespread problem of Allergic Rhinitis (AR), commonly known as hay fever, in children. According to Allergy UK, ‘up to 88% of children with AR have sleep problems, including micro-arousals’. Both conditions can lead to an interrupted sleep, which can have a big impact on children’s quality of life and cognitive function, as well as increase the risk of developing other conditions.

Consultant ENT Surgeon, Mr Paul Chatrath, who has a specialist interest in sinus problems, allergies and children’s ENT disorders and snoring, explores both these conditions in this extensive and interactive webinar.

This event is available to purchase on-demand and was first delivered on Wednesday 10 June 2020. Once you've purchased the course, you can watch it immediately from your Oryon Develop dashboard by logging into your account.

In the first half, we assess Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA) in children and identifying the symptomatic distinctions from snoring. Mr Chatrath explains how to detect OSA clinically, and evaluates the different causes of OSA in children, such as inherited genetic factors or tonsillar and/or adenoid problems. We discuss the diagnostic work up, when and what type of investigations are needed, as well as the latest medical treatments including recent surgical advancements in the field.

The second part of the webinar consists of a discussion on Allergic Rhinitis in children. We outline the symptoms to look out for, alongside a recap on immunology. We will examine different types of allergy in children and investigation techniques such as a blood test, or radioallergosorbent test (RAST) which measures the amount of immunoglobulin E antibodies to allergens in your blood. Lastly, Mr Chatrath explains the various medical, behavioural, surgical and immunotherapy treatments available.
