Ankle pain or injury

Ankle pain often follows a sprain or sporting injury but may also develop gradually. Persistent pain, swelling, instability or difficulty bearing weight may suggest deeper structural damage. MRI scans provide detailed images of ligaments, tendons and cartilage, helping diagnose injuries that may not be visible on X-ray.

Ankle MRI scans are commonly used to investigate:

  • Ligament tears
  • Tendon injuries (including Achilles)
  • Cartilage damage
  • Stress fractures
  • Ongoing pain after ankle sprains

Scan for ankle pain

An ankle MRI scan is a safe, painless and non-invasive way to understand what’s happening inside your ankle. It does not use radiation and is particularly useful for diagnosing soft tissue injuries that may not be visible on X-ray.

  • Persistent ankle pain or swelling
  • Instability or repeated ankle sprains
  • Pain following injury or trauma
  • Symptoms that worsen with activity or weight-bearing
  • Ongoing symptoms despite rest or physiotherapy
