Webinar: Leg Day - Gym & Lower Limb Injuries

This event is available to purchase on-demand and was first delivered on Tuesday 17 November 2020.

In this Covid era, exercise habits have changed for a large number of people. We might expect to see a rise in ‘leg day’ gym-related injuries, especially in those who have had a sudden change in their load. It is therefore important to carefully progress into workouts to avoid overloading the legs, to avoid unveiling pre-existing issues or new injury. Give your mind a workout and join us for this interactive webinar!

Consultant in Sports and Exercise Medicine, Dr Philip Batty will be presenting us with three lower limb gym related injury scenarios that he sees regularly in his clinic. He will be giving an in-depth analysis of:

  • Groin pain – including Femoroacetabular Impingement (FAI)
  • Anterior knee pain – including extensor mechanism tendinopathy
  • Posterior ankle and heel pain

Using real case histories and materials, Dr Batty will be expanding on these three crucial sports medicine areas. We will be exploring key history and exam findings from his experience and published research, particularly in relation to the gym environment and specific functional activities. Whether it is cardio-, or weights-related, it is important to consider risk factors for each individual in order to design a person specific program. Therefore, we will be discussing how to identify subtle clues, with investigations such as the role diagnostic injections, point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) and MRI scans.

We will also be examining current concepts and consensuses around the topics, using up-to-date evidence-based practice and interventions. We will be analysing conservative and non-conservative treatment options, which are vital to get your patients back to the gym.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Identify differential diagnoses for each injury above
  • Understand which specific investigations and scans to refer for
  • Learn about the latest research and evidence-based management options

  • Key history & exam findings in the gym environment & specific functional activities
  • Important differential diagnoses
  • Investigations and assessment – diagnostic injections, ultrasound & MRI
  • Evidence-based practice/interventions & prevention
